Kunsthistorisches Museum (Museum of Fine Art) Overview

Opened in 1891 to house the imperial family's vast art collection, Vienna's Museum of Fine Art was designed by Gottfreid von Semper and Karl Hasenauer. It was built in the style of the Italian Renaissance to firmly establish the building's link with one of history's great artistic periods. Today, the museum, which is located in Marie-Theresien-Platz, holds one of the most important art collections in the world. The Gemaldegalerie (picture gallery) contains works by Rubens, Rembrandt, Vermeer, Durer and Titian, and the largest collection of work by Brueghel in the world.
